John Marshall Award for Contemporary Ethnographic Media
Each year we award one outstanding work that is carrying on the tradition of exploring culture, community and or traditions through film. The award is given each year at the Camden International Film Festival in Maine.
In partnership with the Society for Visual Anthropology, DER has convenes a Filmmaker Pitch for anthropological filmmakers. The event brings leading filmmakers, producers and funders from the independent documentary world to serve as jurors.
With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, DER is developing plans for creating an online union catalogue for ethnographic and folklore films. Co-directors Alice Apley, of DER and Jennifer Cool, of University of Southern California are working with archivists, cataloguers, partner collections and tech designers to develop a robust repository for information about this universe of films, with unique opportunities for user-input modeled on Wikipedia.
