Artemis Willis

Artemis Willis is a graduate student in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago who works on the magic lantern and related proto-cinematic practice and culture. For the last ten years, she was a Brooklyn-based independent media artist, freelance programmer and curator, and a vice-president of the New York Film and Video Council. Recent programming activity includes a series of Russian documentarian Marina Goldovskaya's films, a tribute to pioneering documentary filmmaker Ricky Leacock, a series of the works of nonfiction filmmaker Robert Gardner, and presentation of Leonard Bernstein on Film.

From 2000-2004 she was director of distribution and special educational projects for the New York-based Checkerboard Film Foundation, a leading producer of films on the American arts. From 1988 to 2000, she worked in commercial and feature production (IATSE 481) with directors such as Michael Apted, Ed Zwick and Carol Ballard, and in theater with Sarah Caldwell's critically acclaimed Opera Company of Boston. Ms. Willis frequently speaks to students about her work at schools and universities, including The London School of Economics, NYU and Wellesley College, her undergraduate alma mater. She holds a Masters in Film Studies from Columbia University.
