Internships

Internships are one of the best ways to become familiar with a field or a business that you are considering pursuing as a career. We provide internships to 2-3 people a year who are interested in the field of documentary filmmaking. Applicants with a background in anthropology are of special interest.

Are internships only for students?

No, you may apply for an internship even if you are not currently enrolled in a college or university program. If you are thinking of changing careers, an internship is a good way to test the waters, build contacts, gain experience, improve your résumé.

Are DER internships paid?

No, but there are opportunities to earn commissions or stipends depending on the type of work or project you are assigned. DER interns are also eligible to take advantage of any DER sponsored workshops or programs free of charge. We also provide access to our entire collection of over 400 titles. Our collection offers a rich viewing experience and is beneficial for anthropology, archaeology, international relations, religion, sociology, psychology, film or fine arts majors.

What kind of work will I be doing as a DER intern?

We try to match an intern's skills and interests with current projects. In general, we offer internships in the areas of marketing research and web/internet based projects. We do not often assign interns to production or post production projects.

Can I get college credit?

Yes, DER does provide the opportunity to earn college credits if you are a currently enrolled student. DER has collaborated with several academic institutions in the Boston area. Northeastern University has a student internship program includes a stipend as well as fulfill credit requirements. DER has provided internships to talented students from Boston University, Massachusetts College of Art, Smith College, Brandeis University, U. Massachusetts Amherst, Hampshire College, Lesley University, Boston College and Emerson College.

Do I have to be from the Boston area to get a DER internship?

No, but housing could be a problem if you are planning to relocate to Boston. Apartment rentals within commuting distance are expensive. It helps to have friends or family in the Boston area to help with living accommodations.

Will a DER internship help me get a job?

Yes. Many of our previous interns are working in filmmaking. If you perform well, we will provide a reference for you on any future job application.

When is the best time to apply?

We review applications year round. There are no set deadlines. We generally hire interns seasonally. Summer, Fall and Spring are the peek periods.
